About the Organization
Ballerinas of the Bayou dba The Wellness Collective powered by Ballerinas of the Bayou is a New Orleans based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the physical, emotional, and creative well-being of youth and families through performance arts, wellness education, youth entrepreneurship, and workforce development. The Wellness Collective's creative campus is centrally located in Algiers that we affectionally refer to as our oyster, rich in cultural history yet often overlooked in terms of investment and access to the arts.
Our space includes a dedicated recording studio and multiple mixed-media rooms that support dance, theater, music, and interdisciplinary arts programming. Designed to be flexible and welcoming, the facility allows us to host youth rehearsals, community workshops, and sessions under one roof. A vital anchor for creativity, wellness, and workforce development.
Though officially established in 2022, The Wellness Collective was born out of lived experience and a long-standing desire to restore creativity, access, and healing in underserved communities. Our founder envisioned this work long before the pandemic dating back to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when it became painfully clear that spaces for creative expression and youth development were simply not accessible in many New Orleans neighborhoods. After being exposed to out-of-state youth programming that the vision crystalized: what if those same accessible, creative, and life-changing opportunities existed right here at home? What if young people from New Orleans could lead, create, and thrive in spaces designed just for them?
At The Wellness Collective, we have made that vision a reality. We help young people heal, lead, and shine whether it's through a curated performance, vending at a community event, or showcasing original artwork. We shift youth from being overlooked to owning the spotlight creatively, economically, and unapologetically. Because we know what it feels like to not have a seat at the table therefore we want to continue to build in the community.
Through interdisciplinary programming, The Wellness Collective currently engages over 700 youth annually through after-school intensives, artist residencies, public art showcases, and culturally responsive wellness experiences. Our work is rooted in equity, expression, and artistic creativity anchored in the belief that the arts are essential to both community vitality and youth development.
